Focal Plane Array Optical Focusing and Alignment

چکیده

A need for active adjustment of a focal plane array (FPA) exists for space based telescopes at Sandia National Laboratories. Legacy systems relied upon manual alignment of the FPA to the optics train. The alignment was done by checking the image then adjusting the position of the FPA with shims, repeated until the desired alignment and focus were achieved. This approach has several drawbacks, including the cost of labor and clean room time, potential for damage of sensitive equipment, and potential for loss of alignment due to launch, thermal expansion, etc. An active system will allow for quicker and more robust alignment. The system will utilize three actuators that will be able to adjust the FPA in tip (θx), tilt (θy), and despace (z). [Fig. 1] The FPA will be used as the sensor that will detect when proper alignment is achieved. [Fig. 2] To do this an algorithm is needed to process the image to generate numerical vales of alignment and focus that can be compared.

Focusing of Light by a Nano-Hole Array

We demonstrate a conceptually new mechanism for sub-wavelength focusing at optical frequencies based upon the use of nano-hole quasi-periodic arrays in metal screens. Using coherent illumination at 660 nm and scanning near-field optical microscopy, ~290 nm “hot spots”, were observed at a distance of ~12.5 μm from the array. Even smaller hot-spots of about 200 nm in waist were observed closer to...

Analysis of MMW Imaging System with Scanning Mirrors and Extended Hemispherical Lens

In this paper, Small planar focal plane array (FPA) for millimeter-wave (MMW) imaging system is realized by adding an extended hemispherical lens to a scanning and focusing system, which is composed of a scanning planar mirror and a focusing parabolic mirror. Firstly, optical path and spot-patterns for different incident angles are calculated and compared without or with an extended hemispheric...

Fast Focal Plane Array Detector and Readout for Pulsed Opto- Thermal Radiometry

Mid-infrared focal plane array spectroscopic or spatial imaging of opto-thermal transient emission is reported. Pulsed near-surface optical heating of arbitrary unprepared room temperature surfaces produce depth-resolved transient thermal emissions in the mid-infrared chemical fingerprint spectral region. Two optical configurations, both offering a significant advance in pulsed photothermal rad...

Lensless focusing with subwavelength resolution by direct synthesis of the angular spectrum

We consider the coherent superposition of unfocused wave fronts for lensless focusing of electromagnetic waves with subwavelength resolution. Near the focal point, intensity distributions generated using the approach approximate those generated using lenses. Far from the focal point, discretization of spatial frequencies results in a trade-off between the number of wave fronts and the accuracy ...

Precision Photonic Readout for Focal Plane Signals

We will present the development of a remote Precision Photonic Readout for Focal Plane Array Detectors. Its underlying principles, design and tests as well as limitations will be discussed. The design, in essence, constitutes a remote, via fiber optics, analog-to-digital converter, where the low level focal plane signals are encoded as differential optical phase shifts. These phase shifts are t...
